Events
At an orienteering event competitors run a course consisting of a series of control flags, marked on their map, which must be visited in a specific order. At each control there is a punch which must be used to mark a control card, or an electronic station to electronically ‘punch’ an electronic control card. Competitors are timed, the winner being the one to have successfully punched all the controls in the correct order in the shortest possible time!
More information on orienteering can be obtained by visiting some of the great websites listed in the ‘LINKS’ section of our website, such as Orienteering Ireland (OI) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). But the only real way to get a true understanding of orienteering is to come to our next Kerry Orienteers event. All fixtures are listed in the ‘EVENTS’ section of the website where dates and location details are posted. The organisers at every event are more than happy to explain everything that the beginner needs to know an enable them to have a great day out!
KINGDOM LEAGUE – is a series of club events, where members are listed in order of their performance. their best five of the eight league events, contribute to the final ranking. Prizes are awarded to the top ranking male and female on each of the colour coded courses after the final StreetO club event in Killarney in December.
INTER CLUB CHALLENGE – Every year KerryO members go head to head against members of Cork Orienteering Club, with the venue alternating each year between the two counties. On even years CorkO host the event and on uneven years the event is hosted by KerryO. During the orienteering event performances are computed on a score basis and the club with the highest score is deemed the winners. A perpetual trophy is held by the winners for the year up until the Inter Club Challenge is scheduled again.
SOUTH WEST LEAGUE – is a new Orienteering Ireland initiative and is hosted by the Cork and Kerry Orienteering clubs. It is designed to encourage members to travel to the events in neighbouring counties and to take advantage of the improved road network. While the South West League primarily targets members from Bishopstown Orienteering Club (BOC); Cork Orienteering Club (CorkO) and Kerry Orienteers (KerryO), members of the public and the wider orienteering fraternity are also encouraged to participate in this league. There are 7 events in the South West League for 2024 spread over the calendar year. An individual’s four best scores go to count in the overall South West League results. The seven events will be located in Cork and Kerry and are scheduled for Sundays with a starting time of 11:00. All events will have six colour courses to suit all abilities and age ranges. These colour courses are Brown, Blue, Green, Light Green, Red, Orange. On occasions Yellow or other colour courses such as White, Short Green, Black may be added by the organising clubs, but these additional courses on the day, will not form part of the South West League. In 2024 those members who participated in the Inter Club Challenge against Cork in Ballydrehid, have already completed the first event in the South West league and have only three more to complete before the end of the year. Two of the South West league events will be KerryO events and these will double up with our Kingdom League (Ross Island & Upper Torc). The results from those events will be computed into both the Kingdom and South West leagues.
KerryO Club SPOND App – All members are invited to sign up to the Club Spond App which is a communication application for the smart phones. The app lists club events; sends out reminders of upcoming events, publishes results and allows members engage in the club activities.
